What is the Cobblemon World Cup?

The Cobblemon World Cup is the first inter-server tournament, with 32 communities battling it out to become the Cobblemon World Champions.

The Cobblemon World Cup (CWC) is a competitive tournament that brings together 32 Cobblemon Servers from across the world to compete for the title of Cobblemon World Champion. It is the first event of its kind, designed to highlight the community’s best battlers, drive inter-server collaboration, and showcase Cobblemon’s competitive potential on a global scale.

Every match is played using the base Cobblemon mod, with tournament rules and formats tailored to create a fair and exciting environment for participants and viewers alike.

Competitive Format

The tournament is structured in two main stages:

Group Stage

Teams are divided into groups of four. Each team plays a best-of-three match against every other team in their group. Each match features three separate battles, each played by a different player.

Points are awarded as follows:

  • Win: 3 points
  • Draw: 1 point
  • Loss: 0 points

The top two teams from each group advance, along with select third-place teams depending on standings. The rest are sent home!

Group stage results, including points and battle statistics, can be tracked live on the public spreadsheet.

Knockout Stage

Advancing teams enter a single-elimination bracketand matches become best-of-five. The losing team in each match is eliminated from the tournament.

Finally, a match decides 3rd place, and the grand finale concludes the tournament - giving us our first Cobblemon World Champion.

Match Rules and Battle Format

Each match consists of individual Pokémon battles using either Singles or Doubles rulesets. A coin toss determines the format of the first battle. The losing team of each battle selects the format for the next one. This adds a layer of tactical decision-making beyond just team composition.

Singles Format features common competitive clauses such as:

  • Species Clause (no duplicates of the same Pokédex number)
  • Sleep Clause
  • OHKO Clause (no one-hit-KO moves)
  • Ban on Legendaries, Mythicals, Ultra Beasts, and specific items and abilities

Doubles Format follows a VGC-style system:

  • Open Team Sheets are mandatory
  • Players bring six Pokémon but choose four to battle
  • Item Clause is enforced (no duplicate held items)

Infrastructure: Fair Play and Dedicated Tools

To ensure consistency and competitive integrity, all matches are played on a dedicated tournament server hosted by the Cobblemon Team. This centralized hosting prevents any home-server advantage and ensures all players compete under the same technical conditions.

A custom Cobblemon Showdown server was also created specifically for the event, allowing players to practice and test teams using Cobblemon’s full learnset and sprite data. You can try it out at showdown.cobblemon.com or join the Cobblemon Showdown Discord to coordinate matches and scrims.
